Jakmanias rallied in front of PSSI office at Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan
At least 1,000 football fans have gathered at Menteng Park in Central Jakarta and will travel in convoy to protest outside the headquarters of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and the State Ministry for Youth and Sports Affairs in Senayan.
Traffic congestion above normal levels can be expected in some parts of the city, particularly around the southern end of Jalan Sudirman.
The Persija Jakarta fans, known as Jackmania because of their propensity for violence and general unruliness, are demonstrating against PSSI because of its continuing mismanagement and the generally shocking state of Indonesian football.
“We’re going to stage a demonstration at the PSSI office and continue to the ministry to demand responsibility regarding the recommendations of the National Football Congress,” Jakmania leader Larico Ranggamone told Kompas.com. “The government should not bow its head down to the PSSI.”
The National Football Congress ended late last month with seven recommendations aimed at helping the PSSI develop the sport but as the congress was initiated by the government, the body is under no obligation to implement the seven steps.
The protesters demanded the ministry form a national football council to monitor PSSI’s performance.
