Residents Loot Port Management Office During Deadly Clashes In North Jakarta

Looters took office furniture and supply at port management company
PT Pelindo II in North Jakarta Wednesday

A crowd looted the office of port management company PT Pelindo II during the deadly clashes in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta on Wednesday. Most of the looters were children and teenagers, SCTV reported.

The looting started after hundreds of residents who were waiting for public order officers (Satpol PP) who were hiding inside the office to emerge, realized the officers had managed to leave through a back door. The crowd broke into the office, stripping it of furniture, computers, printers and electric fans.

Previously, tens of police cars burned during the day-long riots were stripped of parts such as rearview mirrors and steering wheels.

The clashes on Wednesday took place after residents mistakenly believed that the Satpol officers were sent to facilitate the tearing down of the tomb of Habib Hasan bin Muhammad Al Hadad, a revered 18th-century ulema known as Mbah Priok. City officials have said the officers were there to demolish several buildings surrounding the tomb that had no permits, including the gate to the tomb complex, but not the tomb itself.
