Indonesia will host the Olympic Games the International Level of Geological Science (International Earth Science Olympiad / IESO), the fourth to be held in Yogyakarta, 19 to 8 September 2010. IESO is a competition for middle schools (SMA) in the field of earth sciences including geology, geophysics, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.
These activities of umbrella International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO) which is an international organization with members of educators, organizations, or geoscience education institutions around the world, both pre-college level and university. This organization was formed to encourage the creation of geoscience education, primarily in pre-college level in the entire world which is based on a true understanding of natural processes of the earth as a system.
This year, through the Ministry of National Education, Indonesia is believed as host to the IESO-4. A total of 19 countries participated in this event, among others, the United States, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Cambodia, Korea, Kuwait, Maldives, Nepal, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, and one observer countries, namely France. Each country sends four students and two mentors (leader), for a total of 77 countries amounted to 33 students and mentors.
Dr D Hendra Amijaya, Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Indonesia from the Department of Geological Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, revealed, all related to competition preparation has been done with the best possible, both operationally and mechanisms of the race. "This Olympic Events will be divided into the written test, lab practice, and practice field will discuss four areas of terrestrial material, ie geology, meteorology, astronomy, and oceanography," said Hendra, Monday (09/06/2010).
Activities written tests and laboratory practices will be held on Campus UGM, whereas for field practice will be held at several locations, among others, Ngalang Kali, Gunung Kidul (geology); GMU GSP Field (the field of meteorology); Field Airforce d'Ivoire, Gunung Kidul (astronomical observations); and Beach Baron, Gunung Kidul (the field of oceanography).
"As for the International Field Trip activities will be conducted in Goa Investigation Bribin to the field of hydrology underground river," he said.
Besides taking a written test and practical activities, participants and the team leader will also make tourist visits to several places including the Museum of Mount Merapi, the Kraton Yogyakarta, Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, Park Smart, Malioboro, and watch the Ramayana Stage. But earlier, the participants and the team leader will visit several schools in Yogyakarta, such as SMAN 3, SMA 6, SMA 8, SMAN 1 Depok, and SMK 2 Depok, Sleman.
The opening ceremony of the 4th IESO will take place at Kepatihan and closure in GMU UC Hall. IESO was first held in Daegu, South Korea, in 2007, coordinated the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Chungnam National University. IESO to-two in the Philippines and the IESO that the 3rd place in Taiwan.
