President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Sutanto to take follow-up steps on the Batam riot.
Presidential Spokesman Julian Aldrian Pasha said here on Friday the head of state had received a complete report from the police chief about the riot by thousands of workers at PT Drydocks World Graha which took place in Batam, Riau Islands, on Thursday.
The riot was sparked by a racist remark by a foreign worker.
The president also ordered the law enforcing agencies to settle the matter properly so that it would not escalate and be exploited by people with ulterior intentions.
Although conditions in Batam had now returned to normal and were under control, the president said, all sides should remain vigilant to prevent a recurrence of the incident, Julian said.
He said the President had expressed serious concern about the riot at the dockyard which had inflicted damage on two offices, one building and 27 cars.
The presidential spokesman said the Thursday rioting at the port would not affect the investment climate in the country. " We have studied yesterday`s incident. We learned that it would not seriously affect investors," he said.
Following the incident at least 30 foreign workers were evacuated by police to the Batam Police Headquarters.
