Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) legislator Mukhamad Misbakhun, who helped instigate the House of Representatives investigation that found the Bank Century bailout illegal, was arrested late on Monday over his alleged use of a fake letter to get $22.5 million in credit from the bank.
He was arrested after about 12 hours of questioning and detained at National Police headquarters, but his lawyer, Zainuddin Paru, said Misbakhun refused to sign the arrest warrant. “My client has been cooperative and there was no reason to arrest him,” he told.
Misbakhun has been charged with two counts of falsifying a letter of credit to obtain a loan fraudulently. He could face up to eight years in prison.
Police have named seven suspects in the letter-of-credit case.
Akbar Faisal, from the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura), who visited Misbakhun at the police headquarters, said the lawmaker looked calm and relaxed.
“He told me that he wanted to sign the proposal to use the right to express an opinion. I will bring the document today,” he told, referring to the initiative seen as the first step of an impeachment process.
Both Misbakhun and Akbar were members of the House special committee that investigated the bailout of Bank Century.
