Jimly Resigns as Presidential Adviser in Bid to Head KPK

Jimly Asshiddiqie resigned from his post as presidential adviser on Monday to run for chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission.

Jimly Asshiddiqie has temporarily resigned as adviser to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to run for chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission.

Jimly, who sent his resignation to Yudhoyono on Monday, told Metro TV that he was resigning to prevent accusations that the State Palace was intervening in the selection process and to allow it to be conducted objectively.

The respected former head of the Constitutional Court is one of the frontrunners for the position, alongside Judicial Commission Chairman Busyro Muqoddas.

With most of the 200-plus candidates not expected to get past a government screening panel, analysts had been worried about the lack of high-profile figures seeking the post, vacant since March when the House annulled the appointment of interim chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean.

Tumpak was appointed to lead the body, known as the KPK, following former chairman Antasari Azhar’s dismissal for amid murder allegations, for which he was later proven guilty.
