An extension of the first line of the proposed Mass Rapid Transit System has been approved by Rp 3 trillion ($ 336,000,000), the cost for the ambitious project, an official said on Friday.
Tundjung Inderawan, director general of the railroads in the Transport Ministry, said the expansion of the Japan International Corporation Agency, the financing of the project has been proposed and approved.
"By expanding the total budget for the first phase of the project has been said up to Rp 17 trillion from the initial Rp 14 trillion," he told the Jakarta Globe.
The first stage involves the MRT one line runs both underground and on an elevated track. The original plan called for the line running from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta, to Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta.
However, the Managing Jakarta extending the line further north, at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Central Jakarta.
Tundjung said the additional costs would not break the budget or delay the work on the project. "We make up the shortfall through the use of budgetary funds for the second phase of the project," he said.
The city government expects the line to go into operation in 2016 with 13 stations, seven and six elevated subway, along the 15.5-kilometer circuit.
The second phase, 6.2 km from the Hotel Indonesia roundabout at Kampung bandanas running in North Jakarta, is expected to be completed in 2020.
Tribudi Rahardjo, president of the city-owned train operator MRT, said place of the original tender for the construction of the project in October, should and would take about a year.
"We are optimistic that construction can begin in spring 2012, so that everything on track, the operative MRI will receive up to 2016," he said.
Once operational, Tribudi said that the MRI would be able to carry up to 18,000 passengers per hour with six trains.
He said the highest passenger volume in Dukuh Atas, which already serves as a hub for the bus lane TransJakarta network and has a railway station was expected.
Tundjung said the Transport Ministry and the Jakarta administration would work together to integrate the existing transport networks with MRI, to give a smooth and efficient exchange for commuters.
"We must work together to develop an integrated system for all modes of transport," he said.
Tribudi said a feasibility study for second phase of the project was completed MRI and would by a team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency to be reviewed next week.
He added that the Government was us on the acquisition of land for the project to complete by 2011th
"The land acquisition will be conducted by the City Council and we need to choose the locations," he said, adding that the city had allocated Rp 90 billion for acquisitions.
