UGM: Suharto unfit to be a National Hero


Anti-corruption Study Center of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) considered unworthy of former President Suharto was crowned as a hero. Dark history of human rights abuses and corruption to be the reason.

"Heroes are not only pinned on those who merit, but also people who can be role models and examples of future generations," said Director Pukat GMU, Zainal Arifin Mochtar, Monday, October 18, 2010.

As reported earlier, Suharto signed in the names of government that will be nominated as a national hero. In addition to Suharto, there is also the name of Ali Sadikin from West Java, Sayid Habib Al Jufrie of Central Sulawesi, KH Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur from East Java.

Next Andi Depu from West Sulawesi, John Leimena of Maluku, Abraham Dimara from Papua, Andi Makkasau from South Sulawesi, Pakubuwono X of Central Java, and Sanusi from West Java.

"Suharto is the father of KKN (corruption, collusion and nepotism) as well as human rights violators are certainly inappropriate precedent," said Zainal. Determination of this national hero, he said, not a matter of the past or the future. "But bad behavior problems."

He considered the proposed Suharto a national hero is a person who continues to live with the past.

Ever, according to him, Suharto did not deserve to be role model for black history that was created during reign as president. "There are many figures who deserve to be national heroes." Indonesia Today
