Joint tsunami alert system to be ready by 2011

The 28 countries touching the Indian Ocean will form a joint tsunami alert network in 2011, which will compliment and eventually replace the current warning systems operated by the United States and Japan.

The 28 countries currently rely on warnings sent by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, the United States, and the Japan Meteorology Agency.

Representatives from the 28 countries held a three-day conference from Wednesday to Friday in Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, to discuss combing their respective tsunami early warning systems into a regional network.

The conference agreed to integrate a tsunami early warning system in the Indian Ocean to be operated by the Intergovernmental Group Coordination on Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.

Tsunami early warning system head Jorn Lauterjung said that before the 2004 tsunami, the Indian Ocean region had not been equipped with tsunami sensors.
