The status of Mount Merapi is Alert now

The status of Mount Merapi in the border province of Yogyakarta (DIY) and Central Java increased from normal active to alert. The increase in the status of the increased activity observed in the most active volcanoes in the world.

"The increase in status as from today Thursday, September 23, 2010 from active normal to be vigilant," says Mount Merapi Section Chief, Investigation and Technology Development Center Kegunungapian (BPPTK) Yogyakarta, Sri Sumarti.

According to Sri, increase the status of Merapi was conducted after obtaining the results of the evaluation data and resumen of the observation post on 20 September last. In addition, a significant increase in status is evident from the seismic multi-phase (MP) or surface seismic and volcanic earthquakes.

Sri Padalah further, if the Mount Merapi volcano is in normal condition, usually average earthquake MP only once per day. While the volcanic earthquakes on average once per day.

"Currently the average MP earthquake occurred 10 times per day. Earthquake Volcanic average three times per day. The total in the last week MP quake an average of 38 times per day, and volcanic earthquakes 11 times per day," Sri explained.

Based on data from the Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) which is attached at the top of the observation post also showed a shortening of the distance. EDM condition of normal per day between 0.1 to 0.3 millimeters, while the current EDM recorded reached 11 millimeters per day.

"All data will continue our evaluation. The increase in this state we also have to convey to local governments around Merapi like Sleman, Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali," she added.

Sri mengingakan only good citizens as well as activities of the sand miners in the river flow at Merapi tipped to be cautious and increase alertness.
