New Suspects Named in Hunt for Jakarta Hotel Bombers

A manhunt is under way for four more terror suspects believed to have played key roles in the twin suicide bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta last month, including recruiting the bombers and assisting the man believed to have plotted the attacks, Noordin M Top, police said. Police released the names and photographs of the four suspects on Wednesday, and are calling on the public to come forward if they have any information on their whereabouts. “We exposed them because we hope to catch them as soon as possible,” National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Nanan Soekarna said at a news conference. The suspects include Syaifudin Zuhri bin Djaelani Irsyad, also called Udin or Soleh, and his brother Mohamad Syahrir, alias Aing. Zuhri, whose age is unknown and who had been living in Bogor, West Java, is believed to have recruited 18-year-old Dani Dwi Permana and Nana Ichwan Maulana, 28, who blew themselves up inside the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, respectively, on July 17, killing seven people and wounding more than 50. Police said Syahrir, 41, who was living in Tangerang, Banten, helped recruit the bombers and also sheltered Ibrahim, alias Boim, a florist at the Ritz-Carlton who investigators say was the “field operator” for the attacks. Ibrahim went missing after the blasts and was later killed in a counterterrorism police raid in Temanggung, Central Java on Aug. 8. Media reports had initially said that Noordin, a Malaysian terrorist leader blamed for suicide bombings in Jakarta and Bali that have killed more than 240 people, was killed in that raid. Police are also continuing a massive manhunt for Noordin, who has been on the run for seven years. The third suspect, Bagus Budi Pranoto, 30, alias Urwah, from Kudus, Central Java, served three and a half years in prison for helping to shelter Noordin in April 2004. The fourth suspect was identified as Ario Sudarso, 36, who has multiple aliases and was known to have recently lived in both East Jakarta and Kendal, Central Java. Ario is alleged to be friends with terror suspect Saefuddin Zuchry, who was arrested in Cilacap, Central Java, in June for allegedly providing bomb-making materials to a terrorist cell in Palembang, South Sumatra, as well as for the July 17 bombings. The National Police also confirmed the arrests of two other terror suspects in Bandung, West Java. They were identified as Ali, a Saudi Arabian national, and his Indonesian interpreter, Iwan. Police said they had originally planned to keep the duo under surveillance, but made the arrests on Monday after news reports broke that they were suspects in last month’s bombings. On Monday, a senior National Police counterterrorism source told the Jakarta Globe that funds for the bombings are believed to have been brought into Indonesia from the Middle East in June. Police failed to apprehend the courier, who is believed to have hand-carried the cash, and he managed to leave Indonesia soon after the attacks. Authorities believe the courier is linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist network and channeled the cash through one of Noordin’s associates.
